Experiment

Each project starts with an experimental phase. This is where we get inspired, collating materials for our next series of artworks. These are often disparate images, colours, textures, patterns. Our inspiration comes from anywhere.

We start the creative process by putting these images onto large screens which we use to construct artwork, seeing how each image lands. Having our own facilities means that we can use the screen printing process in a disruptive way, often overprinting colours, textures and images over time.

Artwork

This is where we stand back and re-evaluate our work, sometimes taking it apart and reconstructing it. We often create several large format images
before editing and cropping it down to the most interesting areas.

Sometimes we decide the artwork remains as a finished piece, but more often than not we apply it to a product. Our design background inform our love to combine art with functionality.

We want our products to be useful and enhance a space at the same time.

Product

Once we have agreed on a product we set about making the most sustainable and high quality in our studio. We want our products to be affordable and retain the qualities of our original artwork and the best way to do this is by making it with our own hands.

Most products are strictly limited edition and only available on our website.

We catalogue each project and corresponding product on our website as a way of archiving our progress as artists and designers

The Studio

The In House studio is based in an old textile mill, near the creative hub of Stroud. The space is split into two: Hayley’s print studio and Marcus’s design space.

Marcus & Hayley have different approaches, styles and expertise, all of which come together in the print process. Artwork often flows between the two spaces, constantly developing and changing.

About us

In House was founded back in 2015 as an outlet for art based projects in the shared studio of Hayley & Marcus Walters. Since moving to Stroud in 2008 marcus and Hayley have shared a studio in an old textile mill, Marcus focusing on graphic design and illustration projects, Hayley running a screen printing service for local brands.

Marcus studied Graphic Design at Central St Martins and worked in magazines as an art director before co-founding his own design studio working with the likes of Honda, Tate, Amnesty, and Innocent Smoothies to name a few.

He has designed ranges of homewares and prints for Heals, John Lewis, Tate, V&A Museum, and Habitat to name a few.

Hayley studied printed textiles at Middlesex University and set up her own clothing label after graduating. Hayley then began printing for other independent clothing labels from her shared studio in Bethnal Green, London.

Over the past few years, Hayley has increasingly worked on her own print-based artwork as well as continuing to print for a wide range of artists and brands.
